Today’s album

Anna Calvi by Anna Calvi

Great Newsthump piece today about Harry Redknapp’s Dog

Newsthump

and another one just for teachers:

Teachers piece

Today’s album..

Bombay Bicycle Club’s “I had the blues but I shook them off”.

A cracking album with some fine drumming and sing along tunes.

today I’m listening to..

Frank Turner’s classic album Love Ire and song.

favourite song: “Photosynthesis” with the refrain:

I won’t sit down and I won’t shut up
Most of all I won’t grow up

Check it out:

Here are the lyrics so can sing along:

Well I guess I should confess that I am starting to get old
All the latest music fads all passed me by and left me cold
All the kids are talking slang I won’t pretend to understand
All my friends are getting married, mortagages and pension plans
And it’s obvious my angry adolescent days are done
And I’m happy and I’m settled in the person I’ve become
But that doesn’t mean I’m settled up and sitting out the game
Time may change a lot but some things may stay the same

And I won’t sit down
And I won’t shut up
And most of all I will not grow up
And I won’t sit down
And I won’t shut up
And most of all I yeah I won’t grow up

Oh maturity’s a wrapped up package deal so it seems
And ditching teenage fantasy means ditching all your dreams
All your friends and peers and family solemnly tell you you will
Have to grow up be an adult yeah be bored and unfulfilled
Oh when no ones yet explained to me exactly what’s so great
About slaving 50 years away on something that you hate
Look I’m meekly shuffling down the path of mediocrity
Well if that’s your road then take it but it’s not the road for me

And I won’t sit down
And I won’t shut up
And most of all I will not grow up
And I won’t sit down
And I won’t shut up
And most of all I yeah I won’t grow up
And I won’t sit down
And I won’t shut up
And most of all I will not grow up

And if all you ever do with your life
Is photosynthesize
Then you deserve every hour of these sleepless nights
That you waste wondering when you’re gonna die

Now I’ll play and you sing
The perfect way for the evening to begin
Now I’ll play and you sing
The perfect way for the evening to begin

And I won’t sit down
And I won’t shut up
And most of all yeah I won’t grow up
And I won’t sit down
And I won’t shut up
And most of all I will not grow up
And I won’t sit down
And I won’t shut up
And most of all I will not grow up

Funniest thing this week…

has to be the wicked witch’s lip synched performance at the Superbowl. Elton must be tearing his wig off. How much did that show cost ? Hundreds of performers, all the wardrobe, the lighting, the performers, the lip sync guy….

and then to end with the soul-crushing hypocrisy of World Peace emblazoned across the stage…well. Cee Lo Green was dressed like a band leader and then in a sequinned black curtain, like an American weeble-wobble. Hilarious.

I urge you  to watch and take in the delicious ridiculousness of it all.

And a great article and follow up comments in the New York Observer…

and finally, something to make you chortle over lunch, especially the second suggestion in this post:

Today I’m listening to

King Creosote and Jon Hopkins’ “Diamond Mine”.

Listening to Django Django…

First listen- what an aural experience this album is. Enjoyable…. can’t help thinking this is the music Talking Heads would be making if they formed today. And collaborated with Hot Chip..

A discovery…

I have discovered today a very useful program for the MAC: youcontrol:tunes. It is basically a program that allows you to control music in your iTunes library without having to go into iTunes all the time. It sits in the menu bar across the top of the desktop and shows track playing and a little downward arrow lets you access your library. Brilliant little program for the gargantuan beast that iTunes has become.

What’s more IT IS FREE. And a tiny download.

Here’s the link if you fancy a look:

Today I’m listening to

Sinopoli conducting the Philharmonia orchestra in their performance of Schubert’s Symphony #4.  A writer claimed (can’t remember who)  that if their house was on fire this would one of the few ‘material’ things they would have to rescue.  High praise indeed.

Joe Queenan’s Red Lobster, White Trash and the Blue Lagoon

Joe Queenan’s Red Lobster, White Trash and the Blue Lagoon. This is laugh out loud funny as Joe takes on the quest of experiencing everything he can that is dumb in American popular culture. Phil Collins (in fact anyone with the surname Collins), Kenny G, Broadway musicals and the Red Lobster cafe are amongst his many targets. If you are interested in American Culture this is a must read.
